location: On the radial side of the thumb, 0.1 cun lateral and superior to the corner of the nail.
actions: revives from fainting; restores consciousness after heatstroke; opens the Orifices and resuscitates respiratory mechanism; lowers fever; eliminates Wind-Heat of Lung; clears Heat, Fire and Summer-Heat from the Lung (bleed); dispels Wind as in convulsions; pacifies the Shen and suppresses madness; restores collapsed Yang; cools, clears and regulates the Lung; frees channel Qi; brings Liver Qi to surface to bolster Wei Qi (Finkelstein, p. 5); moistens the throat; clears, regulates and benefits the pharynx; relieves pain and swelling of the throat; expels Wind from the throat; regulates and discharges Rebellious Qi Fire in the twelve channels (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 87)
indications: mania and withdrawal; psychosis; meningitis; stroke; fainting; convulsions; spasms in frightened children (Mann, p. 5); intermittent fever; shivering; nocturnal perspiration; Heat diseases; cerebral congestion; epistaxis; mumps; parotitis; swelling of the tongue; throat and tongue glistening (Mann, p. 5); sore, swollen throat and jaw (bleed); tonsillitis; common cold; cough; pneumonia; asthma; swollen chest; belching; infantile indigestion; hand and arm numb; pain and contracture of the fingers
needle technique: proximal oblique insertion, 0.1 cun, producing localized pain; bleed for sore, swollen throat or stroke; prick the point, drawing few drops of blood; be wary of bleeding in patient suffering from Xu (Deficiency), esp. Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency), as such might stress the Lung which is poor in Xue (Blood), bleeding may be contraindicated; bleed LI-1 instead (Stephens)
moxa: moxa only for acute epistaxis; direct moxa, rice grain size, 1 to 3 cones of direct moxa, in such an instance.
