definition

xi guan = knee gate; knee border
location: 1 cun posterior to Yin Ling (Sp-9), inferior to the medial condyle of the tibia, in the gastrocnemius muscle.
actions: dispels Wind; relieves pain; frees the channels and collateral vessels; facilitates the joints
indications: pharyngitis; Wind Bi; rheumatoid arthritis; swollen and painful joints with limited range of motion; lower abdominal pain accompanied by pharyngeal pain; medial knee pain, esp., with inability to bend or extend the leg; numbness of the knee; patellar pain; pain in medial foreleg
needle technique: with the knee bent to a 90° angle, perpendicular insertion, 0.3 - 2.0 cun
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
combinations:
» with nei xi yan to treat "a red swollen knee causing an inability to walk" (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 338).
