actions: clears the Heart and stabilizes the Shen; regulates and invigorates the Qi; expands and clears the chest; disperses congested Phlegm in the chest and diaphragm, esp. when contributing to emotional motor seizures; sedates cough; benefits the diaphragm; harmonizes the Stomach and facilitates movement in the Middle Warmer; reverses adverse flow of Qi; transforms Damp Stagnation in the Middle Warmer; acts on the nervous system and brain through the solar plexus and releases tension throughout whole body (Finkelstein, p. 90)
indications: mental diseases; insanity; madness; fear; mania and withdrawal; forgetfulness; amnesia; epilepsy; seizures; syncope; sour taste in mouth; coughing; dyspnea; nausea; vomiting, esp. of sour materials; gastric reflux; hiccough; pyrosis; oppressive sensation in the chest; palpitations due to fright; angina pectoris; chest pain related to roundworms; roundworms in the bile duct; chronic hepatitis; jaundice; acute gastroenteritis; stomachache; abdominal colic and distension; diarrhea
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, producing a local sensation of distension and discomfort, sometimes spreading upward; caution: when needling patients in whom the left lobe of the liver or the heart is enlarged, caution must be taken not to insert the needle too deeply, or to slant it in an upward direction (Shanghai, p. 178);
or oblique insertion inferiorly, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, avoid deep insertion as the liver lies to the interior
moxa: 5 - 10 cones of direct moxa; 10 - 20 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
