definition

er men = ear's gate

location: Anterior to the supertragic notch, at the top of the hollow formed when the mouth is opened, above Ting Gong (SI-19).

actions: disperses Heat; dispels Wind and Cold; improves function of the Brain; revives the sensory organs from unconsciousness; opens the ear; benefits hearing; frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels

indications: tinnitus; deafness; partial hearing loss; deaf-mutism; otitis media; otorrhea; ulcers of the external acoustic meatus; purulent discharge from the ear; epistaxis; upper toothache; temporomandibular arthritis; pain in the jaw and headache; gingivitis; lip stiffness

needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.3 - 0.5 cun, with the mouth open; or oblique insertion, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, or thread below to SI-19 and GB-2, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, sometimes spreading throughout the side of the face

moxa: 3 cones of direct moxa

combinations:

» with TW-23 for headache (Shanghai, p. 159);

» with GB-2 opens the ear; spreads the Qi; benefits hearing (Flaws, 1989, p. 86; Finkelstein, p. 65);

» with TW-17 and LI-4 for otitis media and ear pressure (Shanghai, p. 159);

» join to SI-19 and GB-22, also with TW-17 and TW-3 for deafness (Shanghai, p. 159);

» with su yi cong and other points for deaf-mutism (Shanghai, p. 159);

» with TW-23 relieves toothache immediately (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 292).
