patterns and combinations

after assessing the person and palpating, consider these patterns:
Generally due to food unsuitable for the season, containing perverse Heat, Cold, or Dampness; Cold with a tendency of escape of the Yin; Spleen Yang Xu (Deficiency); Spleen Invaded by Cold-Damp

» infantile cholera: Organic Liquid (Than Dich) defends itself poorly against the Perverse Wind or alimentation, both entailing difficulties of the Liver, repressing the action of the Spleen and Stomach; the maternal milk is disturbed because the mother carries Latent Wind or Qi of the Liver weakens it (McWilliams, et al. Infectious Diseases Handbook, via Finkelstein)

» illustrative combinations:
CV-13, CV-12 and CV-10 (=): regulate the Stomach Qi; strengthen the Spleen and facilitate Dampness; eliminate Food Stagnation; clear Stomach Fire and Heat; facilitate ascension of the Clear and descension of the Turbid
• CV-6 (for males), CV-3 (for females), Sp-6 and Sp-9 for anuria, also..
-add CV-4 and CV-3 for anuria with Qi or Yang Xu (Deficiency)
-add UB-11 and UB-23 for anuria with Qi Shi (Excess) or Heat (McWilliams, et al, Lesson 31, p. 25)

point analysis

»
palpate and consider for "wet" cholera (severe vomiting and diarrhea):
CV-12 (d. D): regulates the Stomach Qi; transforms and suppresses Rebellious Qi; eliminates Food Stagnation; clears Stomach Fire and Heat; Stomach Mu Alarm point
CV-8 (salt D): warms and stabilizes the Yang; strengthens the transporting function of the Spleen and Stomach; regulates Qi
St-25 (d. D): regulates function of intestines; regulates Qi; clears Heat from Large Intestine; transforms Dampness; ascends the Clear and descends the Turbid; Large Intestine Mu Alarm point
CV-4 (d. D): benefits Yuan (Original) Qi; regulates the Qi; resolves Damp-Heat; regulates and reinforces the Qi of the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); Small Intestine Mu Alarm point
• burn one yellow bean or one-half peanut size moxa each on all points simultaneously while holding patient to prevent them from moving. "This treatment will save the patient's life, and will cause the arms and legs to become warm, the pulse to return and the vomiting and diarrhea to cease." (So, 1987, p. 315)

» points for palpation and consideration for "dry" cholera (inability to pass stool or vomit):
UB-54/40 (-, then bleed few drops): drains Summer-Heat; clears Heat from the Xue (Blood); transforms Damp-Heat (So, 1987, p. 315); Bladder He Sea Uniting and Earth point
• GV-26 (-): regulates the Du Mai (Governing Vessel)
LI-11 (-): regulates and harmonizes Xue (Blood) and Qi; clears Heat from Large Intestine and Xue (Blood); Large Intestine Earth and Tonification point
• LI-4 (-): dispels Heat; releases the Exterior; regulates intestines; regulates Qi and Xue (Blood); reduces fever; sedates pain; clears Toxins; Large Intestine Yuan Source point
LI-1 (bleed): resolves the Exterior; clears Heat; moves and discharges pathogenic Yang Ming Heat Heat; Large Intestine Jing Well, Metal and Horary point
Lu-11 (bleed): lowers fever; regulates and discharges Rebellious Qi Fire in the twelve channels (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 87); Lung Jing Well and Wood point
• PC-5 (-): clears Heat in the Xue (Blood); regulates Stomach; drains the Triple Warmer; Pericardium Metal point
PC-9 (bleed): eliminates Heat; Pericardium Jing Well, Wood and Tonification point
TW-1 (bleed): dispels Wind; clears Heat, esp. from the Large Intestine and Triple Warmer channels; drains Fire; Triple Warmer Jing Well, Metal and Entry point
Ht-9 (bleed): sedates the Shen; clears Heat; clears Heat from the Xue (Blood); Heart Jing Well, Wood, Tonification and Exit point
SI-1 (bleed): clears Heat, esp. from the Small Intestine; moistens dryness; relieves inflammation of mucous membranes; Small Intestine Jing Well, Metal and Entry point
CV-13 (-): clears Stomach Heat and disperses relieves epigastric fullness; harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach; descends Rebellious Qi and quells vomiting
CV-12 (=): regulates the Stomach Qi; strengthens the Spleen and dissipates Dampness; eliminates Food Stagnation; facilitates ascension of the Clear and descension of the Turbid; Mu Alarm point of the Stomach and Middle Warmer
CV-10 (=): strengthens the Spleen and regulates the Stomach; dissolves Intestinal Stagnation; disperses Heat of the Lower Warmer
• GB-39 (=): moves Qi of Liver; clears Heat; discharges Gall Bladder Fire; relieves hypochondriac pain; transforms Damp-Heat
Lv-3 (-): extinguishes Liver Wind and Fire; promotes smooth flow of Qi and Xue (Blood); soothes the Liver; discharges Damp-Heat in the Lower Warmer; Liver Yuan Source and Earth point
St-44 (-): cools and drains Heat and Dampness from the Stomach and intestines; regulates Rebellious Qi; stops pain, esp. abdominal pain with fever; facilitates bowel movements; reduces pain; Stomach Water point
