image: Close your eyes. Breathe in and out three times. Settle into your deepest place of secret imagination. Know that you are an archaeologist and you take great interest in your work. You find yourself in a far country at the site of an ancient palace. The people who lived here were famed for their wisdom but are not well known in modern times. You have discovered a water system consisting of clay pipes between the floors. They have not been used in five or six thousand years and are filled with rubble and dirt. The prospect of digging out these channels fills you with dismay, as the pipes are long and of small diameter. As you meditate upon just what it is that you shall do, you climb a hill behind the ancient palace and discover that the original cistern by the spring still holds water and a small dam has built up to keep the fresh water from entering the old system. When you try to walk across the dam, it proves less solid that it had looked and it gives way sending water swirling into the near end of the open pipe. As you step back and watch, an amazing event takes place. The pipes seem to clean themselves as the water moves through them. Upon the closest inspection, you see something that you had never hoped to see. The uphill end of each pipe is wider than the down hill end, making it easier for the pipes to fit together. Yet this simple design is so perfect that the water pouring down the pipe must eddy back upon itself as it goes down. This creates a scouring action that cleans the pipe as the water goes along. Greatly excited by your discovery, you run to the side of the palace that faces away from the hill and discover that the water has alraedy passed through and is carrying rubble and unwanted obstructions out at the farther end. Take a moment to marvel at the genius of the palace-builder and the wonder of your discovery, then allow your eyes to slowly open once again. (Chavez)
