submaximal stress test

1. this is a regular stress test which uses a predetermined stop point - usually the target heart rate [(220 - age) - resting HR].70 + resting HR or symptom limitation, whichever comes first
2. a bicycle ergometer, treadmill, or step test may be used
3. given the many published protocols available, the specifics can be looked up easily in many exercise text books; the American Heart Association puts out free handbooks with all the information needed to perform a safe test
4. benefits of submaximal test:
» patient motivation
» patient education
» specific aerobic exercise prescription
» indications of cardiac abnormalities if patient taken to a workload which is greater then 85% of maximum
» reassure patient they can handle exercise program being prescribed
