location: 5 cun above umbilicus on the midline, 3 cun below the xiphosternal joint.
actions: calms the Heart and Shen; invigorates the Qi; influences the thyroid (Worsley, 1975, p. B-20); clears Heat of Heart and Stomach and relieves fullness in the chest and epigastric region; harmonizes the Spleen and Stomach; descends Rebellious Qi and quells vomiting; opens upper Stomach Qi; strengthens the Spleen and dissipates Dampness; warms the Spleen and Stomach to disperse Cold (Æ)
indications: feverishness with no sweating; insanity; madness; fear; epilepsy; headache and dizziness; fright, esp. with palpitations; cardiac spasms; angina with sense of warmth; pleurisy; bronchitis; anorexia; difficulty swallowing food; gastric reflux; vomiting; hematemesis; hiccough; indigestion; morning sickness; stomach pain and spasms; acute and chronic gastritis; dilated stomach; epigastric and/or abdominal distension and pain; jaundice; tympanites; hard, flat abdominal mass; peritonitis; diarrhea
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, producing a sensation of distension and numbness extending up and down along the course of the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel), or extending laterally (sensation: Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 357)
