location: 2 cun proximal to Yang Chi (TW-4), between the radius and ulna, on the radial side of the extensor digitorum tendon.
actions: relieves Exterior and Hot conditions; induces perspiration; dissipates Wind; clears Heat, esp. from Triple Warmer channel; opens the Orifices (ears and anus) to influence hearing, treat tinnitus and relieve constipation; opens and moves the Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel) and regulates the Dai Mai (Girdle Vessel); normalizes excess of gonadotropins and stimulates thyroid (Finkelstein, p. 62); transforms Phlegm and disperses goiter; dissolves Toxins; clears Xiao Yang (Gall Bladder) in the head and disperses Liver Yang Shi (Excess); tonifies Wei (Protective) Qi; disperses Qi in the intercostal region; frees the channels to facilitate the circulation of Qi in the channels; invigorates the collateral vessels; strengthens and relaxes the sinews and tendons; alleviates pain
indications: common cold; influenza; high fever; Summer-Heat diseases; alternating fever and chills; Wind-predominant painful Obstruction; hemiplegia; violent fear; hypertension; headache, including migraine headache; tinnitus; deafness; partial hearing loss; trigeminal neuralgia due to Wind-Heat; epistaxis; toothache; parotitis; swollen throat; coughing; pneumonia; cholera; severe abdominal pain with cramps; intestinal ulcers; constipation; enuresis; urinary incontinence; retained placenta; uterine prolapse; rheumatism in general; painful and stiff neck; pain in chest and ribs; pain in joints of upper limb; forearm, wrist or finger numbness, contracture or pain; hand tremors; paralysis and pain in fingers inhibiting grasp; sciatica
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, or thread through the arm to PC-6, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, sometimes spreading to the fingertips; or
» diseases of the trunk: slanted insertion, angling needle up the arm, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension spreading up the arm
» if Yang Qi is excessive, TW-5 can be used to draw Yang Shi (Excessive) into the Yang Wei Mai (Yang Linking Vessel) (Finkelstein, p. 62)
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
