Qiang Lang Tang = "Notopterygium and Isatis Root Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Fever and chills, aversion to cold, headache, muscle aches, sore throat, swollen glands.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with slippery and rapid pulse.
indications: Wind-Heat. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as upper respiratory tract infection, influenza, mumps, acute tonsillitis, and acute pharyngitis.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 20 grams: isatis (ban lang gen).
» 9 grams: notopterygium (qiang huo).
modifications:
» for blocked nasal passages and a runny nose, add xanthium fruit (cang er zi) and mentha (bo he).
» for severe sore and swollen throat, add lasiosphera (ma bo), pigeon pea (shan dou gen) and scrophularia (xuan shen).
» for cough and scratchy throat, add peucedanum (qian hu) and arctium fruit (niu bang zi).
» for cough with wheezing or dyspnea, add honey-fried ephedra (ma huang) and apricot seed (xing ren).
» for reduced appetite, add malt (mai ya) and oryza (gu ya).
» for a stifling sensation in the chest and nausea, add citrus (chen pi), pinellia (ban xia) and bamboo shavings (zhu ru).
