Cinnamon and Bulrush C. = Shao Fu Zhu Yu Tang = "Drive Out Blood Stasis in the Lower Abdomen Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Lower abdominal masses, lower abdominal pain, or lower abdominal distention during menstruation dark menstrual blood with clots, or abnormal uterine bleeding with lower abdominal soreness and pain.
tongue and pulse:
indications: Xue Yu (Blood Stasis) Accumulating in the Lower Abdomen. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, irregular menstruation, or uterine bleeding.
cautions and contraindications: The actions of this formula are very strong. It is contraindicated during pregnancy, in most cases which involve excessive menstrual bleeding, and in cases with any active bleeding disorder.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), red peony (chi shao yao), bulrush pollen (pu huang).
» 3 grams: ligusticum (chuan xiong), fennel (xiao hui xiang), corydalis (yan hu suo), pteropus (wu ling zhi), myrrh (mo yao), cinnamon bark (rou gui), dry ginger (gan jiang).
modifications:
» for abdominal pain during menstruation that is worse with pressure and with increased bleeding, add fresh ginger (sheng jiang) and eliminate dry ginger (gan jiang) and rou gui (cinnamon bark).
» with severe pain during menstruation, add sausurrea (mu xiang) and white peony (bai shao yao).
