Magnolia and Saussurea C. = Hou Po Wen Zhong Tang = "Magnolia Bark Decoction for Warming the Middle"

signs and symptoms: Gastrointestinal weakness, abdominal distention, fullness and pain; loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting of clear fluid, weak arms and legs.
tongue and pulse: White, slippery tongue coating.
indications: Damp-Cold Injuring the Spleen and Stomach. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as abdominal pain, peptic ulcer, chronic gastritis, chronic pancreatitis, appendicitis, inflammatory bowel disease, gynecological diseases, leukorrhea, and lumbago.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for one day:
» 4.5 grams: magnolia bark (hou po), citrus (chen pi).
» 2 grams: poria (fu ling), cardamon (sha ren).
» 1.5 grams: saussurea (mu xiang), licorice (gan cao).
» 1 gram: dry ginger (gan jiang), jujube (da zao), fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
modifications:
» for severe epigastric pain, add salvia (dan shen).
» for Food Stagnation, add crataegus (shan zha), malt (mai ya) and medicated leaven (shen qu).
» for hypochondriac pain and acid regurgitation, take with Left Metal Pill (Zuo Jin Wan)
