location: Anterior and inferior to the acromion in the depression, when the arm is abducted.
actions: expels Wind; harmonizes the flow of Qi and Xue (Blood); frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels; stops pain; softens hard masses; facilitates the joints; benefits skin Qi; limits excessive sweating
indications: hemiplegia; rubella; lingering fever after influenza; hypertension; excessive perspiration; spermatorrhea; goiter; scrofula; pain and stiffness of the shoulder; brachial neuralgia; paralysis and/or numbness of the upper limbs; arm pain; muscular spasms of the arm and hand; urticaria; dry skin
needle technique:
oblique insertion toward the hand, or perpendicular insertion, with arm raised, needle angled toward Ht-1, 1.0 - 2.0 cun;
for supraspinatus tendinitis: with arm hanging freely at side, insert needle between acromion of shoulder and greater tubercle of humerus, 0.5 - 1.0 cun;
for perifocal inflammation of shoulder joint: slanted insertion, connecting with jian nei ling, then to TW-14 and finally along deltoid muscle, 1.0 - 2.0 cun;
for limited abduction of shoulder: transverse insertion, point needle down along deltoid muscle, 1.0 - 2.0 cun (Shanghai, p. 222-223)
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 15 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
combinations:
» with LI-5 to treat extreme Heat related to skin rashes (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 103); for Wind rash (Shanghai, p. 222);
» with LI-11, LI-4 and jing bi to treat stroke, hemiplegia, rheumatic arthritis, infantile paralysis in the upper limbs (Flaws, 1989, p. 100);
» with LI-11, LI-4, TW-5, zhi tan #1 and bi zhong (can also use: TW-14, LI-10, TW-4 and TW-3) for sequelae of cerebrovascular accident effecting the upper limb(s) (Shanghai, p. 620)
» with TW-14, LI-11 and jian nei ling for diseases of the shoulder joint (Shanghai, p. 222);
» with GB-34 for bursitis of shoulder (Shanghai, p. 222);
» with LI-11 and LI-4 when aching of the hands make it difficult to grasp things (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 103).
