eye exercises
before exercising eye muscles begin by relaxing them with a technique known as
palming: while in resting position cover both eyes with palms of hands; hands are
cupped and do not touch eyes, palms are resting on cheekbones while fingers of one
hand are crossed over the fingers of the other; do not allow light to come through fingers; palm for several minutes before beginning eye exercises
blink: blink more than normal, every so often during day do fast blinking
scan: throughout the day make a habit of not staring; instead, scan around objects moving eyes but not moving head
clear vision zone: practice looking at objects just out of your clear zone of vision; practice this every day, and blink as you do it
looking up: anytime you are doing close work, look up occasionally and scan the room using your eye muscles
string exercise: take a string 12 feet long and tie a knot every 9 inches, color each knot; tie the end of the string to doorknob and kneel so that the free end of the string is held up to the nose; pick a knot you can see clearly and cover one eye; notice where the string appears as you are looking at the knot; now remove your hand from that eye and cover other eye; notice that string changes position; next uncover both eyes and view the knot; you should see an x formed by the strings crossing at the knot; if you only see one string with both eyes you are turning off an eye; alternately cover each eye and remember in your "minds eye" where each string is; now uncover both eyes again; if you see an x on the chosen knot, good; if not, be patient; try other knots and see what happens; this exercise is designed to improve coordination between both eyes, to give you better depth perception and to eliminate suppression of one eye
imaginary clock: imagine that there is a giant clock directly in front; to see the 12 you have to stretch your eyes upward, to see the 3 you have to stretch your eyes far to the right, etc.; stretch eyes outward to each number, do three complete circuits clockwise and then three circuits counterclockwise
facing sun: sit facing sun, eyes closed at all times, slightly move head back and forth and let sunlight pass over and through closed eyelids; can also be done facing light bulb (minimum 100 watts); do once a day for 5 to 10 min.
peripheral vision enhancement: while focusing on some object directly in front, direct awareness to either far side of the object; do for several minutes each day
