Hai Zao Yu Hu Tang = "Sargassum Decoction for the Jade Flask"

signs and symptoms: Hard lumps or nodules in the neck or by the ear that are not painful, are immobile, cause no change in color of the skin, and do not ulcerate; hypochondriac pain, sighing.
tongue and pulse: Thin, greasy tongue coating, and wiry, slippery pulse.
indications: Qi Goiter. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as simple goiter, hyperthyroidism, benign tumors of the thyroid, and acute simple lymphadenitis. To be effective, the formula must be taken during the early stages for a period of 3-6 months.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: sargassum (hai zao), laminaria (kun bu), kelp (hai dai), fritillaria (zhe bei mu), pinellia (ban xia), forsythia (lian qiao), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), pubescent angelica (du huo).
» 3 grams: citrus (chen pi), blue citrus (qing pi), cnidium (chuan xiong), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for a rapid pulse, palpitations, and a tendency to sweat, add poria center (fu shen) and zizyphus (suan zao ren).
» for tremors of the tongue, add uncaria (gou teng) and white peony (bai shao yao).
» for emaciation, fatigue, lethargy, and loose stools, add white atractylodes (bai zhu) and dolichos (bai bian dou).
» for irregular menstruation, add antler gelatin (lu jiao jiao), cistanches (rou cong rong), leonurus (yi mu cao) and cuscuta (tu si zi).
» for very hard and firm masses, add red peony (chi shao) and wasp's nest (feng fang).
» for hard swelling with nodules, add persica seed (tao ren) and carthamus (hong hua).
