Prerenal and Postrenal azotemia (>15:1); Impaired kidney function with excess protein intake/breakdown/production (burns, gastrointestinal bleeding, infection, thyrotoxicosis) and/or urine reabsorption; Decreased muscle mass; Drugs (tetracycline); Inadequate kidney blood flow (from shock, dehydration); Posterior pituitary disorder.
conditions that can decrease the ratio:
Renal dialysis; Muscular patients experiencing kidney failure; Decreased urea production (hypochlorhydria, diarrhea, vomiting, low protein intake); Hepatic insufficiency; Congenital hyperammonemias.
