Di Huang Yin Zi = "Rehmannia Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Inability to speak, paralysis of the legs, dry mouth but no thirst.
tongue and pulse: Greasy, yellow tongue coating, and deep, small, thin, and frail pulse.
indications: Kidney Yang Xu (Deficiency) and Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency) with Empty Fire Blazing and with Phlegm Blocking the Orifices. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as aphasia, paralysis of the lower legs, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and sequelae of cerebrovascular accident.
cautions and contraindications: This formula is contraindicated for disorders of Shi (Excess), such as Liver Yang Rising. It should not be taken long term. If it must be prescribed for as long as a few weeks, substitute curculigo (xian mao) and epimedium (yin yang huo) for aconite (fu zi) and cinnamon bark (rou gui) to prevent over-heating.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: cornus (shan zhu yu).
» 6 grams: prepared rehmannia (shu di huang), morinda (ba ji tian), dendrobium (shi hu), ophiopogon (mai men dong), poria (fu ling).
» 3 grams: aconite (fu zi), schizandra (wu wei zi), altaica (jiu jie chang pu), polygala (yuan zhi), mentha (bo he), fresh ginger (sheng jiang), jujube (da zao).
» 1 gram: cinnamon bark (rou gui).
modifications:
» for disability of the lower extremities without aphasia, omit altaica (jiu jie chang pu), polygala (yuan zhi) and mentha (bo he).
» for disability of the lower extremities and irritated, hot joints associated with Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency), add loranthus (sang ji sheng), lycium bark (di gu pi) and tortoise shell (bie jia).
» for severe Kidney Yang Xu (Deficiency) with Cold affecting the lower back and knees, add epimedium (yin yang huo) and curculigo (xian mao).
» for concurrent Qi Xu (Deficiency), add astragalus (huang qi) and codonopsis (dang shen).
