definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: chronic fatigue syndrome; low back pain; impotence; premature ejaculation; infertility; chronic diarrhea

» etiology: same as for Kidney Yang Xu (Deficiency), chronic debilitating illness; excessive sexual activity, protracted dampness; old age) with additional stress to spleen Yang such as from habitual consumption of too much cold and/or raw food; can develop from chronic pattern of Spleen Yang Xu (Deficiency), esp. if Kidney Yang is also depleted through excessive sexual activity or other typical causes

» principle of treatment: tonify and warm Spleen and Kidney Yang; strengthen Life Gate Fire

signs and symptoms

signs and symptoms:

chilliness

• aversion to cold

• physical weakness

• lassitude

• constant desire to lie and sleep

• mental listlessness

• apathy

• lack of will power and stamina

• disinclination to speech

• phlegm in throat

• breathlessness

• poor appetite

• abdominal edema and distension

• loose stools

chronic diarrhea, usually watery and often in the early morning

• impotence

• premature ejaculation

• infertility

• scanty or abundant clear urine

• soreness and aching of back, esp. the lower lumbar region

• cold abdomen, legs and knees

• sore and weak knees

• weak and edematous legs

sensation of cold in back

• edema of the lower limbs

» pulse: deep, weak, slow

» tongue: pale, wet, swollen.
