definition
jian liao = shoulder bone-hole
location: Posterior and inferior to the acromion in the depression posterior to the scapula, 1 cun posterior to Jian Yu (LI-15).
actions: dispels Wind and Cold; transforms Dampness; moves the Qi; quickens the Xue (Blood); relaxes the muscles and sinews; relieves pain; facilitates the joints; benefits the shoulder
indications: hemiplegia; hypertension; excessive sweating; goiter; all shoulder conditions including pain, atrophy, inflammation, immobility; perifocal inflammation of shoulder joint; Wind-Damp heavy feeling in shoulder; arms lack strength; upper extremity paralysis; arm pain and/or stiffness; urticaria
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, with arm abducted and needle angled toward Ht-1, or slanted insertion, 1.0 - 2.0 cun, with needle angled downward, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension throughout shoulder, or a numb, electrical feeling spreading toward the fingers;
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole

» thread to Ht-1, thread St-38 to UB-57 for perifocal inflammation of the shoulder joint (Shanghai, p. 224);
» with SI-11 and SI-5 for arm pain (Shanghai, p. 224).
