patterns and combinations

after assessing the person and palpating, consider these patterns:
Wind-Cold Damp; Wind-Cold Bi Syndrome; Liver Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency); Xue Yu (Blood Stasis)

» illustrative combinations:
• LI-4, LI-5, TW-5 and local ashi (tender) points for wrist pain due to Stagnation of Qi and Xue (Blood) in Large Intestine and Triple Warmer channels (Jirui and Wang, p. 197)
• LI-14, SI-13 and GB-34 for inflammation of the tendon of the supraspinatus muscle, on the affected side (Shanghai, p. 199)
• GV-2 (+ and 3 - 15 cones of direct moxa) with GB-30 (+ and D) for obstinate Cold-Bi and Wind-Cold conditions (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 372)
• GB-34 and LI-11: spread Qi, reduce Fire, descend the Turbid, facilitate the joints, and remove Obstruction of the tendons and bones (Finkelstein, p. 69);
• GB-34 and GB-30: dispel Wind and Damp, remove Obstructions from the channels, regulate Qi and Xue (Blood) circulation, and augment and adjusts function of lower limbs (Finkelstein, p. 69)
• GB-34 after GB-30 for Cold-Damp-Wind Bi; augment and adjust function of lower limb; dispel Wind and Damp; remove Obstructions of channels; regulate Qi and Xue (Blood) circulation (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 317; Finkelstein, p. 68)
• TW-5, GV-14 and LI-4 (+): relieve Exterior Wind-Cold and Depression (Finkelstein, p. 62)
• GB-34, GB-30 and Sp-9: dispel Wind; disperse Cold; dissolve Damp; remove Obstructions of channels (Finkelstein, p. 68)

• GB-39 and UB-11: strengthen the tendons and build up the bones (Finkelstein, p. 70)

point analysis

»
therapeutic note:
• ashi (tender) points are particularly useful sites for needling as the local nature of point selection is more often the dominant rationale for selection, as opposed to organ and systemic relationships; thus a large proportion of the points around the body exert relevant influences such as "facilitates flow of Qi and Xue (Blood)", "relaxes and strengthens muscles and sinews", and "frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels"
• superficial needling directed at dispersing Stagnation in the superficial Muscle channels local to the lesion is often a highly effective method of treatment
• moxa often very therapeutic, esp. when Cold is involved

» key points for the general treatment of tendinitis:
