dietary guidelines

eating principles:
» acute:
• increase fluids
• short fruit or vegetable juice fast
• vegetarian cleansing diet
» chronic:
• elimination/rotation diet, rotation diet, rotation diet expanded

therapeutic foods:
• pumpkin seeds (raw) 25 four times per day
• foods rich in zinc: oysters, herring, clams, eggs, molasses, brewer's yeast, squash seeds, almonds, sesame seeds, tahini, foods rich in Vitamin E, kelp (Jensen, p. 61)
• anise, tangerine, cherries, figs, lychee, sunflower seeds, mangoes, seaweeds (Ni,
p. 153)

fresh juices:
• carrot (Walker, p. 151)
• carrot and spinach (Walker, p. 151)
• carrot, beet, and cucumber (Walker, p. 151)
• carrot, asparagus, and lettuce (Walker, p. 151)
• lemon juice in warm water (Walker, p. 151)

avoid:
• food intolerances
• dairy products, rich foods, fatty foods, greasy foods, stimulating foods, citrus, coffee, caffeine, alcohol (Ni, p. 153)


supplements

• Zinc 50 mg per day; DO NOT supplement if patient is using ciprofloxacin (see below) or norfloxacin
• essential fatty acids
• bee pollen 3 tabs per day
• evening primrose oil (Austin,1987)
• Magnesium 400 mg per day
• Vitamin E 800 IU per day
• Vitamin B-complex
• Vitamin B6 50 mg per day (Bastyr)

» avoid:
• Iron: DO NOT supplement if patient is using ciprofloxacin (see below) or norfloxacin (Infect Dis News, 1990; June: p. 17)

» drug interactions:
• Zinc and ciprofloxacin (Cipro): Zinc (29 mg) has been reported to reduce absorption of ciprofloxacin by 29% (Infect Dis News, 1990; June: p. 17)
• Iron and ciprofloxacin (Cipro): Iron (325 mg) has been reported to reduce absorption of ciprofloxacin by 65% (Infect Dis News, 1990; June: p. 17)
