definition
progressive relaxation (Jacobsen, 1938)
This exercise was adapted to a 15 minute period in which all the main muscle groups were tensed and relaxed systematically, from toes to head. Working the whole body from feet, legs, back, arms to facial muscles seemed more effective when the move was from large muscles to smaller muscles in the head. Tension is held for 5 to 7 seconds, released for 30 to 40 seconds of relaxation, and repeated as each group is done twice, with 45 to 60 seconds between muscle groups. As each muscle is tensed and relaxed, patient is told repeatedly to notice the difference in sensations when tensed as opposed to relaxed. (Zahourek, p. 41, 219)
passive progressive muscle relaxation with imagery (PPMRI):
Appealing to cancer patients as it doesn't require muscle contractions and is less strenuous, and allows patient to float off more easily. Goal is to quiet the body by letting go of tension to conserve and potentiate healing energy, thus quieting the mind.
