Tang Kuei and Astragalus C. = Dang Gui Bu Xue Tang = "Tang Kuei Decoction to Tonify the Blood"

signs and symptoms: Feverish feeling, red face and eyes, irritability, thirst for warm beverages, dry skin, anemia. Also for fever and headache due to loss of blood.
tongue and pulse: pale tongue, and flooding, large, and deficient pulse that is forceless when pressed hard.
indications: Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency) with Empty Yang Rising. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as anemia, allergic purpura, thrombocytopenic purpura, leukopenia, neurasthenia, functional uterine bleeding, and postpartum bleeding.
cautions and contraindications: Use with caution in cases with intermittent fever from Yin Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 30 grams: astragalus (huang qi).
» 6 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui).
modifications:
» for ulcerated sores in which the toxin has not been completely discharged, add lonicera (jin yin hua) and licorice (gan cao).
» for allergic purpura, add silkworm (jiang can) and achyranthes (niu xi).
» for a woman with common cold and fever with headache during menstruation or after birth, add allium bulb (cong bai), prepared soybean (dan dou chi), fresh ginger (sheng jiang), jujube (da zao).
» for general anemia, add prepared rehmannia (shu di huang), fleeceflower root (he shou wu), loranthus (sang ji sheng), white peony (bai shao yao).
