signs and symptoms: High fever, facial reddening, irritability, insomnia, restlessness, dark urine; dysentery or jaundice due to Damp-Heat; carbuncles or boils; and nosebleed or vomiting of blood due to Shi (Excess) Heat.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with yellow coating, and a rapid, forceful pulse.
indications: Fire Toxin in all Three Warmers. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as febrile diseases such as encephalitis, septicemia, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, or dysentery; anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, hysteria, epistaxis, purulent skin lesions, urticaria, pruritus, hemoptysis, hematuria, and hypertension.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases with weak constitution, with Xu (Deficiency) syndromes, or with Xue (Blood) Heat or Ying-stage Heat. Contraindicated if there is no tongue coat, indicating Stomach Qi Xu (Deficiency). It should not be taken long-term.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: coptis (huang lian), scute (huang qin), phellodendron (huang bai).
» 3 grams: gardenia (zhi zi).
modifications:
» for constipation, add rhubarb (da huang).
» for jaundice due to obstruction from Heat, add capillaris (yin chen) and rhubarb (da huang).
» for dysenteric disorders with blood and mucus in the stool and tenesmus, add sausurrea (mu xiang), areca seed (bing lang) and fraxinus (qin pi).
» for Damp-Heat in the Lower Warmer with urinary frequency, urgency, and discomfort, add akebia (mu tong), alisma (ze xie) and plantago (che qian zi).
» for nosebleed, vomiting of blood, or erythema and purpura, add fresh rehmannia (sheng di huang), moutan bark (mu dan pi), and scrophularia (xuan shen).
» for purulent lesions such as deep-rooted boils, take with Wu Wei Xiao Du Yin.
