Rhubarb and Moutan C. = Da Huang Mu Dan Tang = "Rhubarb and Moutan Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Lower abdominal distention and pain worse with pressure, mass or hard lump in the lower abdomen, fever followed by chills and sweating, constipation.
tongue and pulse: Thin, yellow and greasy tongue coating, and slippery, rapid pulse.
indications: Large Intestine Damp-Heat. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as peritonitis, ulcerative enteritis, colitis, proctitis, hemorrhoids, rectal prolapse, perimetritis, testitis, gonorrhea, leukorrhea, pyelitis, cystitis, and ureteroliths.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in necrotic appendicitis, appendicitis with peritonitis, appendicitis in infants, or appendicitis due to parasites. Contraindicated in the weak, elderly, or pregnant patient.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 15 grams: benincasa seed (dong gua ren).
» 9 grams: rhubarb (da huang).
» 6 grams: moutan (mu dan pi), persica (tao ren), mirabilitum (mang xiao).
modifications:
» to enhance the effect for the treatment of acute appendicitis, add coptis (huang lian), lonicera (jin yin hua), dandelion (pu gong yin), thlaspi (bai jiang cao), red peony (chi shao yao).
» for high fever, add coptis (huang lian).
» for a palpable mass in the lower abdomen, add Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), red peony (chi shao yao) and viola (zi hua di ding).
» for more severe pain, add corydalis (yan hu suo), melia (chuan lian zi) and saussurea (mu xiang).
» for intestinal abscess with pus, add lonicera (jin yin hua), dandelion (pu gong ying) and oldenlandia (bai hua she she cao).
» for Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency), add Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui) and salvia (dan shen).
