Diagnoses

definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: viral infection; influenza; gastric ulcer

» etiology: Invasion of the Stomach by Exterior Cold as a result of excessive consumption of Cold foods, raw foods and iced drinks and/or exposure to cold

signs and symptoms

» signs and symptoms:

chilly sensation

• preference for warmth

• worse after consumption of cold drinks (which are often quickly vomited)

• preference for warm drinks and foods

vomiting of clear fluid

sudden epigastric pain

» pulse: deep and weak, esp. middle right (Stomach) position; wiry or tight during acute pain

» tongue: pale and swollen, often with a white coating

course and prognosis

» principle of treatment: expel Cold; warm the Stomach; stimulate descending of Stomach Qi
