Platycodon and Schizonepeta F. = Zhi Sou San = "Stop Coughing Powder"

signs and symptoms: Coughing with or without slight chills and fever, sore or scratchy throat, headache, aversion to wind.
tongue and pulse: thin, white tongue coating, and moderate, floating pulse.
indications: Lung Invaded by Wind-Cold. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as headache, upper respiratory tract infection, acute bronchitis, pertussis, and the early stages of pneumonia.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated for coughs associated with Yin Xu (Deficiency) or Lung Heat.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: aster root (zi wan), stemona root (bai bu), cynanchum root (bai qian), schizonepeta (jing jie), platycodon (jie geng).
» 3 grams: citrus (chen pi), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for early stages of Wind-Cold, take with fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
» for common cold, add siler (fang feng), perilla leaf (zi su ye), fresh ginger (sheng jiang).
» for thick, sticky sputum from Dampness transforming into Phlegm, add pinellia (ban xia), poria (fu ling), morus bark (sang bai pi), fresh ginger (sheng jiang) and jujube (da zao).
» for sore throat, painful eyes, and more severe fever than chills due to Wind-Heat, add chrysanthemum flower (ju hua), morus leaf (sang ye), mentha (bo he), scute (huang qin) and arctium (niu bang zi).
» for copious sputum, reduced appetite, a stifling sensation in the chest, and a white, greasy tongue coating, take with Citrus and Pinellia C. (Er Chen Tang).
