Yuan Source point of the Hand Xiao Yang (Triple Warmer) channel
location: In the depression on the ulnar side of extensor digitorum, between the extensor digitorum and extensor digiti minimi, at the junction of the ulna and carpal bones.
actions: dispels Wind; clears Fire and Heat; treats thyroid imbalance (Matsumoto); left TW-4 is tonic to Yang of the whole body (Finkelstein, p. 61); relaxes the muscles and sinews; moistens Dryness; promotes function of Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); frees the channels and collateral vessels
indications: dysphoria; melancholy; thyroid imbalance; diabetes; tidal fevers; shivering; malaria; common cold; deafness; facial spasm; eyes red and swollen; thirst and dryness in mouth; throat blockage; tonsillitis; painful and stiff neck; chest discomfort; shoulder, arm and elbow pain; brachial neuralgia; unable to raise arm; wrist stiff and inflamed; pain and weakness of the wrist, with decreased grasping strength
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.3 - 0.5 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, sometimes spreading to the middle finger;
transverse insertion, needle angled across the wrist, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, for diseases of the wrist, soreness and distension possibly throughout wrist
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
combinations:
» with UB-12, UB-10 and GV-14 for Hot or Cold headache without sweating (Shanghai, p. 237);
» with PC-7, si feng and shang ba xie for arthritis of the wrist, hand, fingers and bones of hand (Shanghai, p. 237).
