He Sea Lower Uniting point of the Da Chang (Large Intestine); Exit point of Sea of Xue (Blood)
location: 6 cun below Du Bi (St-35) or 3 cun below Zu San Li (St-36), one finger breadth lateral to the crest of the tibia.
actions: drains Shi (Excess) from the upper region of body and relieves fullness of the chest; calms asthma; rectifies the Spleen and harmonizes the Stomach; regulates, drains and frees the Intestines, esp. the Large Intestine; cools Heat and resolves Dampness to clear Damp-Heat; "treats acute cases with Heat, St-36 treats chronic cases" (Finkelstein, p. 21); dispels Food Stagnation and eliminates Accumulations of the Large and Small Intestines; frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels
indications: hemiplegia; fullness in the chest and lateral costal region; asthma; gastritis; abdominal pain or distention; borborygmi; enteritis; colitis; appendicitis; diarrhea; dysentery; beriberi; pain in the navel; chilled sensation down to the bone marrow; pain in the lower back and knee; swelling of the knee; arthritis of the knee; stiffness or muscular atrophy and weakness of the lower extremities
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, angled slightly toward tibia, 1.0 - 1.5 cun, producing a a numb, electrical feeling spreading toward foot
moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxibustion with a pole
combinations:
» with St-16, St-18, GB-21, LI-11 and Lv-3 (strong stimulation) for acute mastitis (Shanghai, p. 638);
» with St-39 for diarrhea due to indigestion (Shanghai, p. 638);
» with St-25 adjusts the intestines to halt diarrhea; drains Dampness and Heat from Large Intestine; leads away accumulated impurities of Large Intestine; and clears the vicious Heat of Yang Ming (Finkelstein, p. 21);
