XUE

The Concept of Xue (Blood):
• translated as "Blood", it is closely allied with and sometimes synonymous with the Yin of the body
• Xue is derived from the denser aspects of food and air through the workings of the Triple Warmer
• its formation also depends on Jing and Shen to be complete
• its circulation depends on Qi, which is as inseparable from it as the pulse
• its ability to nourish the body is wrapped up in the term "Ying"
• blood also requires fluid or water

Functions of Xue (Blood):
• nourishment: of the entire body-mind-spirit
• moistening (nourishes, refreshes and prevents dryness)
• maintains and connects (the organs, the body's disparate functions and parts); hair is said to be the final extension of the Blood
• the material foundation for Shen, its "root", demonstrated by their affiliation in the organ of the heart

Organs and their Relation to Xue (Blood):
• the Spleen produces the Xue (Blood)
• the Liver stores the Xue (Blood)
• the Heart governs the Xue (Blood)
• the Lung vitalizes the Xue (Blood)
• the Kidney refines the Xue (Blood) to make Jing (Essence)

Relationship of Qi and Xue (Blood):
• is the essential Yin-Yang relationship in the body
• Qi is the commander of Xue (Blood), Xue (Blood) is the mother of Qi

Dysfunction of Xue (Blood):
• Xue Xu = Deficiency, Vacuity, insufficiency (quantity or quality), or weakness
• Xue Yu = Stagnation
• Xue Re = Heat
• Xue Wang Xing = Reckless
