definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: anxiety neurosis; depressive neurosis; extreme malnutrition; anemia; hypertension; hyperthyroidism; tachycardia; arrhythmia; kidney failure

» etiology: long-standing anxiety, worry and excessively busy lifestyle combined with deep emotional problems and anxiety; attack of exterior Heat consuming the Body fluids and exhausting the Yin (Maciocia, p. 207)

signs and symptoms

mental restlessness

• agitated manner

• anxiety

• irritability

• feeling of unease

• forgetfulness

low-grade fever or feeling of heat, esp. in afternoon or evening

• insomnia

• difficulty staying asleep

• dream-disturbed sleep

• night sweats

dry mouth and throat

malar flush

palpitations

• warm palms and soles

» pulse: thin and fast or floating-empty and fast

» tongue: dry and red, usually with no coating; tip redder and swollen with red points; deep midline crack reaching the tip (Maciocia, p. 206)
