mastoiditis
acupuncture
patterns and combinations
after assessing the person and palpating, consider these patterns:
Qi Stagnation; Xue Yu (Blood Stasis); Heat in the channels; Liver and Gall Bladder Invaded by Damp-Heat
» therapeutic note: Mastoiditis is not easily treated with acupuncture alone; other therapies such as herbs may be necessary. Acupuncture will help bring Wei (Protective) Qi in to help promote body's healing. Watch carefully to make sure of improvements. Treat 1-2x daily.
Also, use local points if not too inflamed, but opposite side if very inflamed.
» illustrative combinations:
GB-2 and TW-21: open the ear; spread the Qi; benefit hearing (Flaws, 1989, p. 86; Finkelstein, p. 65)
TW-21, TW-17 and LI-4 for otitis media and ear pressure (Shanghai, p. 159)
TW-17 and GB-2 for deafness and Qi blockage in the ears (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 290)
Lu-11, LI-1 and TW-1: treat high fever (Eisen)
TW-2 and TW-3: treat ear inflammation (Eisen)
LI-4 and LI-11: resolve infections (Eisen)

UB-11 (-): resolves Shi (Excess) Heat, esp. External Heat; connects the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) to the Shu Associated points; distributes Bladder Qi and Jing-Ye (Yin) to all the dorsal Shu points, thus cooling them (Finkelstein, p. 38); removes Obstruction of Qi circulation of the Tai Yang channels (Bladder and Small Intestine) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel) of the upper back; regulates all bones; facilitates Xue (Blood) flow; relaxes the muscles, sinews and tendons; invigorates the collateral vessels; esp. with headache accompanied by chills or high fever and chills with no sweating; Hui Reunion point of the Bones; Sea of Xue (Blood) upper entry point
UB-23 (+): benefits the ears and controls the bones; tonifies and adjusts the Kidney; strengthens Yang and Qi Hai; nourishes Yin, Xue (Blood) and Kidney Jing (Essence); counterbalances Liver Fire; resolves Dampness; Kidney Shu Associated point
TW-21 (-): disperses Heat; dispels Wind and Cold; improves function of the Brain; revives the sensory organs from unconsciousness; opens the ear; benefits hearing; frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels
TW-17 (-): clears Heat; disperses Wind; frees the channels and circulates Qi locally; benefits hearing and vision; opens the Orifices; relaxes the sinews and tendons, especially facial; relieves spasms; softens hard masses
GB-2 (-): eliminates Wind and Cold; clears Wind Heat; clarifies the senses; clears blockage and restores circulation of Qi in Gall Bladder channel near ear; invigorates Liver and Gall Bladder; relaxes the sinews and tendons
SI-19 (-): loosens and regulates Qi of ear; benefits the ear; clears Heat; Small Intestine Exit point
St-6 (indirect moxa with ginger): regulates the flow of Qi; benefits the jaw; opens the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels; consider if pain extending to jaw and if Heat is not predominant
LI-11 (-): clears Heat; regulates and harmonizes Qi and Ying; regulates the Xue (Blood); improves immune function (Finkelstein, p. 9); tonifies Metal to cool inflammatory processes; eliminates Dampness through the Intestines; Large Intestine Upper He Sea Uniting, Earth and Tonification point; Master point of Heat in the body (Finkelstein, p. 9)
LI-4 (-): regulates Qi and Xue (Blood); reduces fever; descends Stagnant Qi from sinuses; activates Wei (Protective) Qi and stimulates the immune system; tonifies Metal to cool inflammatory processes; elevates Clear Qi and descends Turbid Qi; clears Toxins; eliminates Damp-Heat; sedates pain; Large Intestine Yuan Source and Entry point
LI-1 (-): resolves the Exterior; cools, moves and discharges pathogenic Heat from Yang Ming (Stomach and Large Intestine); brings down high fever; tonifies Wei (Protective) Qi via the internal duct of the Triple Warmer; sedates pain; Large Intestine Jing Well, Metal and Horary point
Lu-7 (=): treats Shi (Excess) patterns; circulates the Wei (Protective) Qi; benefits the region of the ears; tonifies Yang Ming (Stomach, Large Intestine); Lung Luo Connecting and Exit point; command point of the head and neck
