note: please refer to a personal teacher or a class to get a fuller understanding of the practice of Qigong; books can also be helpful but can never transmit the essential teachings of this ancient art.
The basic principles involve adjusting body posture, adjusting respiration or breathing cycle, adjusting the mind and nervous system; there are various types of qigong; please see "relaxation breathing" and "nourishing breathing"; invigorating breathing is described below.
1. sit straight on chair, with feet firmly on the ground, about shoulder width apart
2. thighs and trunk should form a 90° angle
3. place hands, palms down, gently on legs, allow elbows to bend naturally
4. keep head, waist, back straight
5. breath naturally, but deeply; as patient inhales abdomen swells, as patient exhales abdomen contracts
6. gradually increase depth of each inhalation and exhalation until the number of breathing cycles is reduced to 6-8; although the duration of each breathing cycle is lengthened, breathing must remain relaxed
