Xi Jiao Di Huang Tang = "Rhinoceros Horn and Rehmannia Decoction"

signs and symptoms: High fever, bleeding (vomiting blood, nosebleed, blood in the stool or urine), thirst with an inability to swallow, sometimes delirium; menorrhagia.
tongue and pulse: Scarlet tongue with prickles, and thin, rapid pulse.
indications: Xue (Blood) Heat. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as mental illness, encephalitis, meningitis, hepatic coma, blood or pus in the anterior chamber of the eye, hemorrhage, febrile infectious diseases with hemorrhage, septicemia, measles, uremia, thrombocytopenic purpura, and acute leukemia.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases of bleeding due to Yang Xu (Deficiency) or Spleen and Stomach Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 20 grams: fresh rehmannia (sheng di huang).
» 10 grams: red peony (chi shao yao).
» 9 grams: moutan bark (mu dan pi).
» 3 grams: rhinoceros horn (xi jiao) (substitute water buffalo horn).
modifications:
» for vomiting of blood, add biota (ce bai ye) and imperata (bai mao gen).
» for blood in the stool, add sanguisorba (di yu) and sophora flower (huai hua mi).
» for blood in the urine, add imperata (bai mao gen) and segetum (xiao ji).
» for spitting blood and epistaxis, add imperata (bai mao gen) and biota (ce bai ye).
» for a bad temper due to Qi Constraint, add bupleurum (chai hu), scute (huang qin) and gardenia (zhi zi).
» for rashes, add lithospermum (zi cao) and indigo (qing dai).
» for severe bleeding, add powdered pseudoginseng (sang qi).
» for Qi Xu (Deficiency) not controlling the Xue (Blood), add astragalus (huang qi) and ginseng (ren shen).
» for high fever and impaired consciousness, take with Bos and Curcuma F. (An Gong Niu Huang Wan).
