signs and symptoms: Copious and foul-smelling nasal discharge, nasal obstruction, frontal headache.
tongue and pulse: Normal or yellow tongue coating, and floating, rapid pulse.
indications: Wind-Heat. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as nasal suppuration, acute or chronic sinusitis, acute, chronic, or allergic rhinitis.
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 6 grams: xanthium fruit (cang er zi).
» 3 grams: magnolia flower (xin yi), angelica (bai zhi), mentha (bo he).
modifications:
» for more pronounced Heat in the lungs, add morus bark (sang bai pi) and lycium bark (di gu pi) or scute (huang qin).
» for very copious and purulent nasal discharge, add lonicera (jin yin hua).
