definition

ming men = gate of life (fire)
location: On the posterior midline, inferior to the spinous process of the 2nd lumbar vertebra.
actions: pacifies the Shen; clears the Brain; strengthens the Kidney; benefits and replenishes the Kidney Yang; restores collapsed Yang; nourishes the Yuan (Original) Qi; relieves mental and physical exhaustion; strengthens the back, esp. benefits the lumbar vertebrae; reinforces and astringes the Jing (Essence); regulates the menses; stops vaginal discharge; distributes Zhong (Ancestral) Qi and Yang to the pelvis to mobilize the Yin of the pelvis; stimulates adrenals, testes and ovaries (Finkelstein, p. 77); frees the channels and invigorates the collateral vessels
indications: general exhaustion; disorientation due to Xu (Deficiency); forgetfulness; fear and fright; nervousness and anxiety, esp. in children; insomnia; somnolence; tidal fever; fever without perspiration; meningitis; infantile convulsions; sequelae of infantile paralysis; anemia; edema; headache; dizziness; tinnitus; intestinal colic; peritonitis; rectal and anal prolapse; hemorrhoid; blood in the stool due to Cold; nephritis; kidney pain radiating to the abdomen; simultaneous pain in the abdomen and lumbar region; enuresis; urinary incontinence; sexual dysfunction; spermatorrhea; impotence; sterility; leukorrhea; vaginal discharge with blood; uterine bleeding due to Kidney Yang Xu (Deficiency); endometritis; bone disorders; spinal myelitis; low back pain or sprain; sacral pain; sciatica; cold extremities
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, angled slightly toward the spine, 0.5 - 1.5 cun, producing a local sensation of distension; too deep an insertion will send a numb, electrical sensation into the leg(s)
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa, but direct moxibustion contraindicated in persons less than 20 years old; 5 - 15 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
