hot half bath

1. fill bath with water which is hot, but below maximum tolerance
2. have patient lie in tub
3. take oral temp., then raise water temperature to hottest patient can tolerate (105° F to 115° F)
4. once sweating begins apply towel (wrung from ice water) to forehead and face
5. keep head cool at all times
6. maintain oral temperature 101° to 103° for 5 - 45 min. depending on severity of problem
7. for temperatures greater than 103° F, shorten time in bath and use lower bath temperatures; bath should be terminated as soon as sweating is observed
8. follow with cold mitten friction
