Jiao Hui Intersecting point of the Foot Xiao Yang (Gall Bladder) channel on the Hand Xiao Yang (Triple Warmer) channel

location: Posterior to the ear lobe, in the depression between the mandible and the mastoid process.

actions: clears Heat; disperses Wind; frees the channels; benefits hearing and vision; opens the Orifices; relaxes the sinews and tendons, especially facial; relieves spasms; softens hard masses

indications: convulsions (with headache and a rigid, arched back); hypertension; deafness; partial hearing loss; deaf-mutism; ear pain; otitis externa, esp. with dampness and itching; otitis media; tinnitus; aural vertigo; sore eyes; blurred vision; membrane over the eye; mouth and eyes awry; trigeminal neuralgia; facial paralysis; facial spasm; temporomandibular arthritis; jaw tightly clenched; jaw swollen; lower painful; toothache; parotitis; both sides of throat swollen; cervical adenitis; scrofula; lymphangitis

needle technique: slanted insertion, 0.5 - 1.2 cun, with needle angled in a medial, downward direction, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, sometimes spreading toward the throat causing a constricted, hot feeling; used for deaf-mutism; or

perpendicular insertion, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, needle angled toward the eyeball of the opposite side, producing local pain and a sensation of distension and possible soreness at the bottom of the ear which often spreads to the front of the tongue; used for facial paralysis or parotitis

moxa: 3 - 5 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 10 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole

» with GB-2 for deafness and Qi blockage in the ears (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 290);

» with SI-19, ting cong and ting xue for tinnitus (Shanghai, p. 161);

» with qian zheng, St-4 and LI-20 for facial paralysis (Shanghai, p. 161);

» with St-6 and LI-4 for parotitis (Shanghai, p. 161);

» with St-7 for temporomandibular arthritis (Shanghai, p. 161);

» with Ht-5 for sudden loss of voice (Shanghai, p. 162);

» with UB-10 to clear the Mind; suppress rebelling Qi (Flaws, 1989, p. 85);

» with St-36 removes Obstruction in channels; relieves difficulty in chewing.
