» clinical manifestations: patient shows no energetic response to any treatment; empty look in eyes, like no one there; patient doesn't seem to be hearing what is said to them
» conventional diagnoses: possession, psychosis, depression
» pulse: commonly unaffected, may be erratic and/or superficial
» tongue: usually unaffected but may be quivering or have a thick coat
» etiology: acute or past physical or emotional trauma; invasion by External Pernicious Influence
» principle of treatment: dispel External Dragons
» therapeutic note: use sedating needle technique sedate first; if the person and the pulses change, fine; if no change with sedation, then tonify.
» acupuncture points:
GV-20 (- or +): dispels Wind and Cold of head and opens Orifices; awakens the Brain, Mind and senses; pacifies the Shen and stabilizes the Will; elevates the Clear Qi; extinguishes Liver Wind from upper body and pacifies the Liver; stimulates the pineal; Sea of Marrow point; Jiao Hui Intersecting point of the Yang channels
UB-11 (- or +): dispels Wind, Wind-Cold, Wind-Heat and Cold; resolves Shi (Excess) Heat, esp. External Heat; treats madness with contractions, i.e., convulsions; connects the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) to the Shu Associated points; expands and relaxes the chest; relaxes the muscles, sinews and tendons; facilitates Xue (Blood) flow; Hui Reunion point of the Bones; Sea of Xue (Blood) upper entry point
UB-23 (- or +): tonifies and regulates the Kidney; nourishes Yin, Xue (Blood) and Kidney Jing (Essence); strengthens the Brain and Marrow; prevents or relieves general stress fatigue or premature senility (Finkelstein, p. 44); benefits the ears and brightens the eyes; strengthens the Heart (Ross, 1985, p. 130); strengthens Kidney function of reception of Qi; strengthens Yang and Qi Hai; influences adrenals; counterbalances Liver Fire; resolves Dampness; Kidney Shu Associated point
UB-61 (- or +): calms the Shen; reinforces the Kidney; relaxes the muscles and tendons; frees the channels and collateral vessels; Entry point of the Yang Qiao Mai (Yang Motility Vessel)
