The Chinese organ Xiao Chang is translated as the Small Intestine
It is classified as a Fu organ, which is to say Yang in nature
Its channel is named Hand Tai Yang or Greater Yang

» The Major Functions of the Small Intestine include:
• Separates the Clear from the Turbid; a) Pure becomes bodily fluids, b) Turbid becomes urine; this function also operates on the mental, emotional and spiritual levels.
• Responsible for quality of Xue (Blood).
• Responsible for digestion and nutrient absorption.
• Small Intestine and Heart responsible for sweating.
• Small Intestine diseases are mainly related to urinary dysfunction.

» Relationships of the Small Intestine:
• The channel is coupled with the Foot Tai Yang Bladder channel
• High tide in the channel occurs between the hours 1 to 3 pm
• Its "clock" partner is the Liver (12 hours away)
• Its elemental pair is the Heart - in the Fire phase; specifically Imperial Fire
• Their color is red
• Its season is summer
• The direction from which its influence comes is the South
• Its climate is Hot
• Its power is that of flourishing growth
• Its flavor is bitter
• Its odor is burnt, scorched or charred

» Expressions of the Small Intestine:
• When the Small Intestine is out of balance, pain, discomfort or abnormal sensations are frequently experienced in the lower abdomen; sensitivity and/or tension can often be palpated in the hypogastric area

• This organ is injured by the climatic factor Heat

» Foods that are said to benefit the Small Intestine:

Major symptoms of Small Intestine disharmony include:
» Shi (Excess) patterns:
• Small Intestine Qi Tied
• Small Intestine Stagnant Qi Pain
• Small Intestine: Full Heat descending from Heart

» general symptoms of Shi (Excess): congested abdomen; pain at temples and sides of neck; flaccidity of muscles and joints in the arms; especially the elbows; reddish urine.

» Xu (Deficiency) patterns:
• Small Intestine Xu (Deficient) and Cold

» general symptoms of Xu (Deficiency): swellings of nodules; hemicrania; tinnitus; pain around the ear; pain depressing the abdomen.
