patterns and combinations
after assessing the person and palpating, consider these patterns:
invasion of Wind-Heat; Lung Heat and/or Stomach Heat; Fire Toxin
» therapeutic note: various authors (So; Shanghai; McWilliams) note that the excessive consumption of meat, Hot foods and greasy foods create a predisposition to this condition which may be an adequate etiology in itself but is usually then triggered by stresses such as exposure to wind.
» illustrative combinations:
"carbuncle in the throat": (1) needle LI-4 and LI-11; (2) needle Lu-11 and TW-1 using a triangular needle and a strong stimulus to bleed a few drops; (3) needle Sp-10, UB-54/40, GB-20, St-6 and CV-22; needle GB-2 if a pain radiates to the ear after needling the preceding points. If pus is absent, apply indirect moxa with ginger to the external throat above the swelling and follow with external applications of Rivenal water for several days. If pus has penetrated the skin of the neck, apply white ointment or Red Jade ointment externally. Gargling frequently, followed by retention, with a boric acid solution is also advised if pus is present. If the patient is free of fever, apply seven cones of direct moxa, red bean size, to LI-11, bilaterally; if this is inadequate and the condition is severe, apply five cones of direct moxa, red bean size, to Sp-10. (So, 1987, p. 174)
