» etiology: Xue (Blood) or Yin Xu (Deficiency) and consequent general drying of tissues, e.g., postpartum, elderly, chronic disease; in Exogenous Heat diseases prior to reestablishment of normal fluid intake; can occur spontaneously in hot, dry climate

signs and symptoms

• dry mouth and throat

constipation

• dry hard stool

difficult defecation

» pulse: thin, fine

» tongue: dry; red or pale; no coating

course and prognosis

» principle of treatment: promote fluids in Large Intestine; nourish Large Intestine Yin; tonify Large Intestine Qi.
