signs and symptoms: Hypochondriac pain, abdominal distention, acid regurgitation, belching, bitter taste in the mouth, gnawing hunger.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with a yellow coating, and wiry, rapid pulse.
indications: Heat in the Liver Channel. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as acute or chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, esophageal reflux, and hiatal hernia.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated in cases due to Stomach Cold from Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients:
» 180 grams: coptis (huang lian).
» 30 grams: evodia (wu zhu yu).
preparation: Grind these ingredients into powder and form into pills with water. Take 2-3 gram doses 2-3 times a day. May be prepared as a decoction with dosage reduced to one-tenth the above specified amount.
modifications:
» for severe distention, add melia (chuan lian zi).
» for diarrhea or dysentery with abdominal pain and spasm, add white peony (bai shao yao).
