location: On the radial side of the index finger, 0.1 cun lateral and superior to the corner of the nail.
actions: resolves the Exterior; cools, moves and discharges pathogenic Heat from Yang Ming (Stomach and Large Intestine); wakens the Shen, opens the Orifices, and revives unconsciousness; tonifies Wei (Protective) Qi via the internal duct of the Triple Warmer; brightens the eyes; clears and moistens the throat; cools the Lung; sedates pain
indications: "sudden Wind Strike and fulminant clouding with Phlegm congestion" (Ellis, et al, 1988, p. 93); high fever; sudden attacks of fever; fever without perspiration; coma; loss of consciousness; deafness and tinnitus; blindness; acute conjunctivitis; toothache; mouth dryness; parotitis; submandibular swelling; stomatitis; laryngitis; throat blockage; sore throat; shortness of breath and constricted sensation in the center of the chest (Mann, p. 6); cough; shoulder and back pain reaching back into the clavicle; swollen limbs; numbness of the fingers
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, 0.1 - 0.2 cun, producing localized pain and numbness, or prick to bleed; bleeding particularly useful for relieving Lung Heat in patient suffering from Xue Xu (Blood Deficiency) because the Large Intestine is considered rich in Xue (Blood), while bleeding Lu-11 might stress the Lung which is poor in Xue (Blood) (Stephens); treat Muscle channel of opposite side at LI-1
moxa: 1 - 3 cones of direct moxa; 3 - 5 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
