nephrosis
diagnoses

definition and etiology

definition:
Nephrotic syndrome; degeneration of the renal tubular epithelium.

etiology:
May be caused by toxic reaction to poison, degenerative diseases, trauma causing decreased renal blood flow, or increased flow of fluid through the kidneys.

signs and symptoms

signs and symptoms:
• heavy proteinuria
• edema
• hypertension may be present
• scanty urine
• acute nephrosis will show scanty urine with little or no albuminuria or edema

lab findings:
• UA shows RBCs, casts, lipids, high protein levels
• increases in lipids and triglycerides

course and prognosis

The renal tubules are damaged and prognosis depends upon the agent of the destruction. If extensive necrosis occurs, prognosis is predictably poor.

differential diagnosis

• Amyloid nephrosis
• Hemoglobinuric nephrosis
• Osmotic nephrosis
• Toxic nephrosis
• Hypoxic nephrosis
• Cardiac or hepatic edema
