Gypsum C. = Bai Hu Tang = "White Tiger Decoction".

signs and symptoms: High fever with profuse sweating, flushed face, severe thirst, aversion to heat, excessive urination; may be headache, toothache, or bleeding of the gums and nose.
tongue and pulse: Yellow and dry tongue coat, with flooding, forceful or slippery, rapid pulse.
indications: Yang Ming Level Heat, or Qi-Stage Level Heat. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as encephalitis, meningitis, erysipelas, scarlet fever, eczema, lobar pneumonia, heat stroke, diabetes mellitus, and periodontitis.
cautions and contraindications: This formula should only be prescribed in cases of Shi (Excess) for patients of strong constitution. It should not be taken long-term. Contraindicated for those with severe chills, pallor and fever, but without sweating or thirst due to stress. Contraindicated for conditions of Heat in the Nutritive (Ying) or Xue (Blood) levels, as it may easily injure the Yin.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 20 grams: gypsum (shi gao).
» 15 grams: oryza (jing mi).
» 9 grams: anemarrhena (zhi mu).
» 3 grams: honey-baked licorice (zhi gan cao).
modifications:
» for concurrent Wind Cold, add allium bulb (cong bai), soja (dan dou chi) and asarum (xi xin).
» for red, swollen eyes, and excruciating headache, add coptis (huang lian) and scute (huang qin).
» for pain and swelling of the gums, headache, nosebleed, a dry mouth, thirst, and constipation due to Lung Heat and Stomach Fire, add rhubarb (da huang).
» for wasting and thirsting disorder, or Heat that severely injures the Fluids resulting in thirst, irritability, and insatiable hunger, add trichosanthes root (tian hua fen), phragmites (lu gen) and ophiopogon (mai men dong).
» for subcutaneous blotches (petechiae), irritability and restlessness, disorientation, and insomnia associated with febrile disease and Heat Toxin, take with Coptis and Scute C. (Huang Lian Jie Du Tang).
» for Qi Xu (Deficiency), add ginseng (ren shen).
» with arthritic pain, add cinnamon twig (gui zhi).
» with convulsions, add antelope horn (ling yang jiao) and gastrodia (gou teng).
