signs and symptoms: Recurrent abdominal pain, a stifling sensation in the chest and stomach, irritability, insomnia, intermittent chills and fever, loss of appetite, vomiting after eating, diarrhea, and cold hands and feet. There may also be vomiting of roundworms.
tongue and pulse: Map-like shedding of the tongue and hidden or wiry and tight pulse.
indications: Collapse From Roundworms Caused by Heat in the Chest and Epigastrium (Stomach), and Cold in the Organs (Intestines). With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as ascariasis, roundworms in the bile duct, chronic gastroenteritis, post-gastrectomy syndrome, colitis, or chronic dysentery.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated for explosive diarrhea or Damp-Heat dysenteric disorders.
ingredients:
» 300 pieces or 480 grams: mume (wu mei).
» 480 grams: coptis (huang lian).
» 300 grams: dry ginger (gan jiang).
» 180 grams: asarum (xi xin), phellodendron (huang bai), aconite (fu zi), cinnamon twig (gui zhi), ginseng (ren shen).
» 120 grams: Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), Xanthoxylum (chuan jiao).
administration: Steep the mume (wu mei) overnight in vinegar, than pit and mash. Grind and dry all of the ingredients, and form into pills with honey. Take in 9 gram doses 1-3 times daily on an empty stomach with warm water.
modifications:
» in the absence of Cold symptoms, or if no coldness in the hands and feet, omit cinnamon twig (gui zhi) and aconite (fu zi).
» if the Normal Qi is not yet Xu (Deficient), omit ginseng (ren shen) and Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui).
» for severe abdominal pain, add melia (chuan lian zi) and sausurrea (mu xiang).
» for severe vomiting, add evodia (wu zhu yu) and pinellia (ban xia).
» for roundworms in the bile duct, add quisqualis (shi jun zi) and melia root-bark (ku lian gen pi).
» for chronic dysentery, add sausurrea (mu xiang) and white peony (bai shao yao).
» to increase the antihelmintic effect, add quisqualis fruit (shi jun zi), areca seed (bing lang), melia root-bark (ku lian gen pi) and torreya nut (fei zi).
» to excrete the parasite through the stools, add rhubarb (da huang).
