location: Slightly anterior and inferior to the free end of the 11th rib.
actions: spreads and promotes smooth flow of Liver Qi; clears Obstructions of the Liver channel and its Luo channels; influences liver's ability to neutralize unemployed sex hormones to help headaches, migraines, and menopausal syndromes (Finkelstein, p. 75); invigorates the Stomach and Spleen; relieves Food Stagnation; benefits the Qi; harmonizes the Liver and Spleen; moves Fluids and relieves distension; transforms Damp-Heat; disperses Cold-Damp; regulates circulation of Qi and Xue (Blood); quickens the Xue (Blood) and disperses Xue Yu (Blood Stasis); softens and dispels hard masses
indications: anger; hypertension; panic attack; loss of weight; anorexia; over-eating; mouth dry; stertorous respiration (Mann, p. 70); vomiting; stomach pain; indigestion; Food Stagnation; jaundice; pain in chest and ribs, often making it difficult to lie down; enlargement of liver and spleen; hepatitis; abdominal distention; ascites; borborygmi; undigested food in stool; diarrhea; flatulence; lumbar pain; pain in the thighs with difficulty turning over (Mann, p. 70); edema. Other indications: Main point to use when Liver and Spleen not harmonized (Maciocia, p. 456).
needle technique: perpendicular or slanted insertion, 0.8 - 1.0 cun, producing a local sensation of distended feeling which may extend towards rear abdominal wall. caution: no deep needling (especially in patients with enlarged liver or spleen)
moxa: 3 - 7 cones of direct moxa; 5 - 15 minutes of indirect moxa with a pole
