Major Bupleurum C. = Da Chai Hu Tang = "Major Bupleurum Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Obesity or strong constitution with fullness in the chest and hypochondriac region (with or without pain), bitter taste in the mouth, loss of appetite, alternating fever and chills, nausea, continuous vomiting, burning diarrhea or constipation, despondency or irritability.
tongue and pulse: Yellow tongue coating, and wiry, forceful pulse.
indications: Interior Heat in the Xiao Yang channel. With the appropriate presentation, may be used in conditions conventionally diagnosed as impaired hearing, migraine headache, trigeminal neuralgia, obesity, diabetes, hypertension, pleurisy, sour stomach, gastritis, acute gastroenteritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, peritonitis, acute pancreatitis, hepatitis, cholecystitis, cholelithiasis, impaired liver function, constipation, dysentery, and malaria (especially with fever predominant).
cautions and contraindications:
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: bupleurum (chai hu), scute (huang qin).
» 6 grams: chih-shih (zhi shi), rhubarb (da huang), pinellia (ban xia), white peony (bai shao yao).
» 3 grams: fresh ginger (sheng jiang), jujube (da zao).
modifications:
» for severe abdominal pain, add corydalis (yan hu suo), lindera (wu yao) and cyperus (xiang fu).
» for uncontrolled, continuous vomiting, add coptis (huang lian) and evodia (wu zhu yu).
» for marked chills, add ephedra (ma huang), forsythia (lian qiao) and adzuki bean (chi xiao dou).
» for acute cholecystitis, add lonicera (jin yin hua), forsythia (lian qiao), dandelion (pu gong ying) and viola (zi hua di ding).
» for gallstones, add lysimachia (jin qian cao), pyrrosia (shi wei) and lygodium spores (hai jin sha).
» for intercostal neuralgia, add Minor Trichosanthes C. (Xiao Xian Xiong Tang).
» with constipation, add mirabilitum (mang xiao).
