location: Midway between anus and the tip of the coccyx, with the patient lying on their abdomen.
actions: pacifies the Shen; clears Heat; opens the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) and Du Mai (Governing Vessel); harmonizes Yin and Yang; cools Heat in the Xue (Blood); disperses swelling and stops pain; regulates the Intestines; astringes the Jing (Essence); secures the lower Orifices, particularly benefits the Qi of the anal sphincter; retracts the anus; treats hemorrhoids; tonifies the spine; strengthens the lower back
indications: psychosis; hysteria; anxiety; depression; fatigue; lassitude; epilepsy; infantile convulsions; vasomotor headaches; hematemesis; intestinal bleeding; diarrhea; blood in the stool; fecal incontinence; difficult stool; hemorrhoids; rectal prolapse; difficult urination; urethritis; cloudy urine; general sexual dysfunction; impotence; eczema of the scrotum; pruritus vulvae; delayed parturition; spinal stiffness and muscular cramps; lower back and sacral pain
treatment note: important that patient be advised to avoid sexual relations or cold drinks after this point has been treated (Finkelstein, p. 77)
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, between the coccyx and rectum, with patient prone or in knee-chest position, 0.5 - 1.0 cun, producing a local sensation of soreness and distension, possibly spreading to the anus
moxa: 3 - 15 cones of direct moxa
