Scute and Cimicifuga C. = Bu Ji Xiao Du Yin = "Universal Benefit Decoction to Eliminate Toxin"

signs and symptoms: Strong fever and chills, face red and swollen, throat swelling and pain, thirst, sudden onset.
tongue and pulse: red tongue with a powdery-white or yellow coating, and floating, rapid, forceful pulse.
indications: Wind-Heat and Damp-Phlegm. With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as erysipelas, carbuncles, epidemic parotitis, acute tonsillitis, suppurative otitis media, cellulitis of the head and face, and lymphadenitis.
cautions and contraindications: Use with caution in treating cases with Yin Xu (Deficiency).
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: forsythia (lian qiao).
» 6 grams: arctium (niu bang zi), wine-fried scute (huang qin), scrophularia (xuan shen), lasiosphera (ma bo), isatis root (ban lang gen), platycodon (jie geng), bupleurum (chai hu).
» 3 grams: mentha (bo he), wine-fried coptis (huang lian), citrus (chen pi), cimicifuga (sheng ma).
» 1 gram: silkworm (jiang can), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for hard, stubborn, localized swelling, add moutan (mu dan pi), red peony (chi shao), fritillaria thunbergii (xiang bei mu), prunella (xia ku cao) and string melon sponge (si gua luo).
» for more obvious exterior symptoms with less severe Internal Heat, reduce the dosage of scute (huang qin) and coptis (huang lian) and add schizonepeta (jing jie), siler (fang feng), mentha (bo he) and morus leaf (sang ye).
» when the exterior symptoms have disappeared and the Internal Heat is severe, omit bupleurum (chai hu) and mentha (bo he) and add lonicera (jin yin hua) and indigo (qing dai).
» for Internal Heat with constipation, add rhubarb (da huang), chih-shih (zhi shi) and mirabilitum (xuan ming fen).
» for constipation, add rhubarb (da huang).
» for concurrent orchitis, add melia (jin ling zi) and gentiana (long dan cao).
