definition and etiology

» conventional diagnoses: neurosis; mania; hypertension; glossitis; hyperthyroidism; bladder infection

» etiology: progression of Heart Yin Xu (Deficiency); arises during some fevers by invasion of Pericardium by pathological Heat; arises from chronic anxiety, constant worrying and depression through consequent disturbance of the Shen and Qi Stagnation; often transmitted from Liver Fire

signs and symptoms

signs and symptoms:

• restlessness

• impulsiveness

• irritability

• unease

• feverish sensation

• insomnia

• headache

• flushed red face

• bitter taste in the mouth

thirst

• swelling, pain and ulceration of tongue and mouth

palpitations

• reddening of tongue tip

• cracking of tongue

• sparse hot dark urine with dysuria.

» pulse: full rapid, overflowing, esp. at Heart position; can seem fine when combined with Kidney Yin Xu (Deficiency)

» tongue: red, esp. with red tip and possible ulceration at the tip, midline crack, thin yellow coating
