Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang = "Drive Out Stasis in the Mansion of Blood Decoction"

signs and symptoms: Chronic, fixed, piercing pain in the chest and/or head, chronic hiccough, dry heaves, depression, extreme mood swings, palpitations, insomnia, restless sleep, irritability, evening tidal fever, dark or purplish lips, complexion, or sclera.
tongue and pulse: dark-red tongue with dark spots on the sides, and choppy or wiry, tight pulse.
indications: Xue Yu (Blood Stasis) in the Chest . With the appropriate presentation, this formula may be used in treating conditions conventionally diagnosed as migraine, psychosis, postconcussion syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, coronary artery disease, rheumatic valvular heart disease, hypertension, cor pulmonale, intercostal neuralgia, costochondritis, menopausal syndrome, primary dysmenorrhea, and urticaria.
cautions and contraindications: Contraindicated during pregnancy, in most cases which involve excessive menstrual bleeding, in cases with bleeding diathesis or any active hemorrhagic disorder.
ingredients: dosage for two days:
» 9 grams: persica (tao ren).
» 6 grams: carthamus (hong hua), Chinese angelica (tang kuei) (dang gui), red peony (chi shao yao), cyathula (chuan niu xi), chih-ko (zhi ke), raw rehmannia (sheng di huang).
» 3 grams: cnidium (chuan xiong), bupleurum (chai hu), platycodon (jie geng), licorice (gan cao).
modifications:
» for headache, add vitex (man jing zi) and tribulus (bai ji li).
» for hypochondriac area pain, add curcuma (yu jin) and allium bulb (xie bai).
» for angina pectoris due to coronary artery disease, increase the dosage of carthamus (hong hua) and cnidium (chuan xiong), and add salvia (dan shen).
