Entry point of the Foot Tai Yang (Bladder) channel; Jiao Hui Intersecting point of the Hand Tai Yang (Small Intestine), Foot Yang Ming (Stomach), Hand Xiao Yang (Triple Warmer) channels and the Yang and Yin Qiao Mai (Motility Vessels) at the Foot Tai Yang (Bladder) channel; receives vessels from the Heart channel and numerous muscle and divergent channels; Polarization point of the Yin and Yang Qiao Mai (Motility Vessels); site where the Yin and Yang change into their opposite and where the Yin and Yang Qiao separate, according to chapter 17 of the the Nei Jing (Finkelstein, p. 37); Master point for the eyes (Mann, p. 30)
location: 0.5 cun medial to the inner canthus of the eye, in the depression slightly inferior to the inner canthus.
actions: disperses and eliminates Wind; cools and eliminates Heat in the eyes; clears the vision and brightens the eyes; enriches Yin (esp. in relation to the eyes); controls the pituitary gland and its secretions via the hypothalamus and the autonomic nervous system; triggers alarm reaction which releases reserve Jing Qi from the Kidney (esp. with asthma, hives and rheumatoid arthritis); regulates the sleep cycle through the Yin and Yang Qiao Mai (Motility Vessels) by regulating the opening and closing of the eyes; opens the channels and invigorates circulation
indications: pituitary, hypothalamus and pineal gland problems; occipital and frontal headaches; vertigo; hysteria with vision loss; all eye disorders; acute and chronic conjunctivitis; myopia; hypermetropia; astigmatism; color blindness; night blindness; optic nerve atrophy; optic neuritis; inflammation of the or serrata; glaucoma; early stages of cataract; keratoleukoma; pterygium; red and sore eyes; polyps extending into the eye; excessive tearing on exposure to wind; obstructive membranes inside or outside the eye; inner canthus pain and itching
needle technique: perpendicular insertion, slowly along the medial orbital wall, 0.5 - 1.0 cun. procedure: instruct the patient to close the eyes, gently push the eyeball laterally and away from the point, where it is held with one finger; insert the needle slowly with a minimum of lifting-thrusting or twirling, between the orbit and the nose to a depth of 0.5 - 1.0 cun; apply pressure to the point for one to two minutes following removal of the needle; caution: a needle inserted too deeply may enter the cranial cavity, moxibustion is contraindicated
